This little spiky cactus is one of those plants that simply looks nice. No fruit, no culinary fun facts, no extra uses. It just sits there and looks pretty. And sometimes that is more than enough.
I used to have a cactus exactly like this at home, so this time the inspiration was very simple and very personal. I did not have to invent anything or go looking far and wide. I simply drew a plant I knew well from my own pot. Although the pot in this picture is made up, because at my place a few cacti were growing together in one container. Here, though, a more decorative pot suited the character of the illustration better.
I like coloring pages with potted plants that do not pretend to be anything more. This is simply a cactus in a pot, with a clear shape and spines that instantly tell you what you are looking at. That makes the drawing simple, easy to read, and pleasant to color. You can reach for classic shades of green, but you can just as easily play with the color of the pot and give it a bit of personality. A blue-and-purple theme came to my mind right away.
