Mystery picture with an owl, pixel art – decode the picture

Here is the continuation of coding images. Today I am posting another mystery picture for kids, the theme of which is an owl.

It turned out that the children really liked decoding images. A nice game, containing a surprise – a puzzle. Solving it requires a moment of concentration and playing with colors. What’s more, creating images to decode, both pixel and more geometric, is also quite a nice game. Perfect to wait out the children’s extra classes, or the moments before they change in the cloakroom.

In the case of the mystery picture with an owl, I have prepared several versions of the exercise for kids to solve. At different levels of difficulty. Knowing your children, you have to choose the best worksheet for them.

Mystery picture with an owl level 1 – means that the code was written pixel by pixel, square by square. Starting from the top left corner and ending at the bottom right. While drawing, the child moves down row by row, just like reading a book.

Mystery picture with an owl level 2 is quite similar. Here, however, the code specifies entire ranges of colored pixels. Sometimes it will be one square, and sometimes several. But the code is still organized. Row by row down.

The worksheet itself with the solution to the mystery picture can also become part of the task for children. The board with the colored solution can be cut into squares, which will be used to compose the dictation according to the code – such a solution without crayons.

Decode the mystery picture – owl pixel art

Because the owl is symmetrical, I decided to use the vertical axis of symmetry to color the mystery picture. Choose whether you prefer to flip the image to the right or left side. The child’s task is to color the squares on one part of the image according to the given code. The other part must be colored using a mirror image of the previously completed squares.

There is also the possibility for the child to write the code themselves. I will not post the correct solution here, because there are many of them. But this is also quite an interesting exercise. Requiring concentration and careful checking. Sometimes this element of math exercises turns out to be the most difficult. Checking whether the task has been completed correctly.

Graphic dictation can be used in various ways:

  • coloring the picture according to the given code – children read the code on their own,
  • coloring the picture according to the given code by ear (auditory memory training) – someone is reading the code to the child,
  • pasting the image according to the given pattern,
  • redrawing the image from the original solution,
  • writing the code based on the printed pattern.
