I Spy Hearts – brain teaser for kids and adults

Hearts, loops, and curly doodles. Sure, it’s a bit cliché — but who cares? Sometimes I just like to draw hearts for no reason at all. A swirl here, a flower there… and so on, scribble by scribble, I have a whole series of them. This time, I decided to turn my random sketches into something a bit more useful.

That’s how this “I spy” worksheet came to life. I spy hearts to count. Or — if you prefer — a relaxing heart-themed coloring activity. A simple brain teaser with more than one way to play.

Pick the version that works best for you: classic counting, gentle coloring fun, or the answer key for quick checking.

One pattern, two ways to play – how does it work?

🔹 I spy and count the hearts

This is the classic version: look at the heart-filled field and count how many times each shape appears. Write the numbers in the small boxes next to each heart. Kids often treat it like a game. Adults say it’s a calming focus exercise.

You can approach it in different ways. The hardest version is doing all the counting in your head. But you can help yourself too — some people color each heart a different color, others cross them out or circle them in loops. My kids usually go for loops, which used to be tricky with tight, cluttered worksheets. They told me they don’t like it when elements are too close together and lines overlap. So I made sure to leave more space between the hearts than in typical “I spy” pages.

I’ve also included a version with the answers, so you can check your own observations—or show the correct solution to a child.

🔹 I spy… and color

While the worksheet doesn’t officially say “color me,” it works perfectly as a coloring activity too. Just count how many of each heart type there are—and then color them in. Many people assign a unique color to each shape, which adds a fun extra challenge for attention and accuracy. It’s a great way to practice focus and precision — or just relax with something simple. Perfect for kids, teens, adults and even seniors.

If you want to try this brain teaser, download the version that works best for you. And if you know someone who might enjoy it too, feel free to share the link. I love knowing that these little hand-drawn hearts can end up on more desks out there.

Let me know if you prefer coloring or counting — I’d be happy to draw more worksheets like this with different themes!
