Roanoke is in the outer banks of North Carolina. In 1584 Sir Walter Raleigh paid two English navigators (Philip Armada, and Arthur Barlowe) they found an island with which seemed to be fertile soil. When they went back the two navigators brought two Indians with them. They gave the land to queen Elizabeth. They named it Virginia because Queen Elizabeth is the virgin queen. The next year about 100 men set sail with Raleigh’s cousin Sir Richard Grenville.

The Indians on Roanoke greeted the men. They found a spot that they had chosen then started to build some houses and other buildings using bricks. Grenville returned to England to get some supplies. Ralph Lane was appointed governor and in charge.

The settlers where too late to plant crops and the English men had to depend on the Indians for food to survive on. The settlers kidnapped the Indians for information. Because the settlers kidnapped them they destroyed their fish traps. By the beginning of June the settlers were in a war with the American Indians. A few Indians died.

Grenville’s way back to the colony took longer than expected the settlers were hopeless. Sir Francis Drake had 23 ships. Drake offered a ship to Lane. Lane took the offer and planed to sail to England in about a month. After awhile the ship got blown out to sea in a horrible storm. After it blew away Lane decided to sail back with Drake immediately. In June all the colonists sailed to England. Grenville arrived back with three loaded ships. He searched for the men he left behind to claim the land for England. He found one slaughtered and another one murdered possibly by the Roanokes the English men formed a raiding party and attacked. After the attack the men found that the Roanokes fled and accidentally attacked the Croatians. It’s unknown whether they forgave them or not? In the 1590’s White sailed back. He found large trees that looked like a fort he saw the word CRO and thought they sailed to the Croatians islands. White didn’t get to go to the Croatians Island because a storm hit and he was forced to sail to England. In 1709 John Lawson spent time exploring where the Croatians once where. He claimed to see white Indians. And some people found there was a severe drought in that time. They think it was probably the worst drought in 800 years!!!

What is a Website

I recently had a science fair in my school. We had to choose a topic on anything related to science and get it approved or right an long report or essay on a topic. Since I couldn't find something interesting on 'fish', I decided to do something that I could learn from.

Creating a website and defining what a website is, is what I chose to do my science project about. Here is my hypothesis and beginning summary of the topic. You can find my final project here at What is a Website dot com. I used the free website creator tools at Mrgoodhost.com. Creating a website can get complicated, I needed some help, but the free tools are easy.

Hypothesis-I predict that you need three primary things to start a website. Domain name, webhost and a topic. You know you want to create a website, but first you need to consider what the website will be about. Knowing what the website is about will help determine your domain name. Most domain names are 1 to 3 words that describe what the website is about. The domain name is the URL of the website, such as www.whatisawebsite.com. What is a Website is the website I have created for this project. A webhost is the computer that has the ability to display the website on the World Wide Web so that everyone can see it worldwide. The webhost is a computer, just like you have at home, except that all it does is display websites on the World Wide Web.

The domain name is the URL of the website, such as www.whatisawebsite.com. My favorite part of DARE would probably be the part where we talked about bullying and how it’s best not to be a bystander and watch the bullying happen instead it is better to tell an adult.

The three most important things I learned in DARE is how drugs affect your body, like smoking can give you lung cancer, it’s gross and makes your teeth yellow. Spreading rumors or hurting someone physically is another form of bullying. The place where bullying most often occurs is at lunch or in the locker rooms. My third most important thing I learned in DARE is pressure. There are different kinds of pressure, peer pressure, heavy pressure, ext. Pressure can lead to different things like someone telling or asking you to do something you don’t want to do. It is important for me to take a stand when I see bullying happening in my school because you don’t want to see anybody get hurt or anything turn into a serious issue. You should never bully someone else because it just leads to something bad happening to you and the person who is being bullied. This is what I learned in drug abuse resistance education (DARE).

A New Website for Authentic MLB Jerseys

Sometimes it is hard to find authentic sports jerseys - the same jerseys the pro ball players wear. Football is my favorite sport, but since the season is over, except for the Pro Bowl, which is being played today; I decided to put up a baseball jersey site.

So, if you want to check it out, head on over to Authentic MLB Jerseys dot com.

Story of the Runaway Little Boy

RUNAWAY BOY
BY: Smart Kid World - An Original Story Written as Homework - Copyright 11/14/2007

I’m always getting annoyed by my sister not listening or crying because she doesn’t get her own way. But one day she pushed it too far. I think she thought the video game system was a piñata! My sister just started hitting it because I wouldn’t let her play, she shoved it off the desk that the system was sitting on and CRASH!!! It broke I tried turning it on and fixing it but she demolished it! Then I knew I had to do something. I was sick of it. I decided I was going to RUNAWAY!!! I would leave tomorrow and never return.

Later that night at about 11:25 while every one was asleep I started packing. I packed a couple snacks, a few blankets, and three pillows in my dad’s old suit case. I knew where I was going. I’d go to Kings Island in Ohio. I woke up at 5:45 I snuck out the back door of the house and opened the garage door. There was the dune buggy. I took it out of the garage and loaded it with all my supplies started it up and went to the bank without anybody knowing I was gone.

Once I got to the bank I went in and withdrew $62.00 bucks and got out and cruised to Ohio. On my way to Ohio it was getting dark and I was almost ran out of gas.
I got to the gas station and fill my tank up then I found the cheapest hotel I could find in my price range. It was called the super 8 motel. It cost $28 dollars a night, and gas cost $3.00 so I would have $31.00 left. So I stayed the night at the motel. In the morning I checked out of the motel and got ready to go to Cincinnati. I started the buggy and went on my way.

I finally saw the sign that I had crossed into Ohio and man was I glad I was almost there. After awhile of driving I saw Kings Island!!! When I got to the park entrance I bought my ticket and snuck my luggage in. I had to find a spot to hide so I was walked around and saw this news paper it said that a young 4 1\2 ft tall male child was missing with a picture of ME!!!!!!!!! I was worried something bad might happen.

Once I found the perfect place to stay (a house of mirrors) I went in and found a little spot where nobody could find me it was a good thing I had a good memory because the mirrors made it very tricky to remember where you were going or where you had been, but I did figure it out and made my way through the maze of mirrors.

When I got out of the house of mirrors I went around riding rides and having fun but I didn’t really feel good about leaving home. I knew that my family was upset and sad and that they were out looking for me, even my sister!

When it started to get dark and all the people started to leave the park, I began to get scarred. The cleaning crew and the security workers were shutting down all the lights and locking up and that’s when I realized, I was all alone, by myself and no one, especially my mom was not there to talk to me or hug me, say “good night” and tell me to brush my teeth.

What was I going to do? Should I tell someone the next day? Could I wait all night long? I kept hearing weird noises and I saw shadows moving, it made me nervous and I huddled down in my little cocoon that I had made out of blankets and began to pray, hoping my mom or dad would hear me and that maybe, just maybe God would forgive me and protect me through the night.

Finally, morning came and it couldn’t have come soon enough. The first person I saw come through the park entrance was a chubby, older man dressed in a police uniform. I think he saw me he walked over and looked around then he scratched his head he looked confused then he started talking into a walkie talkie.

By time it was night fall the park was covered with police officers. The officers started looking in the house of mirrors I ran back to my spot hoping nobody would find me. Then I saw a person’s reflection. I didn’t know what to do I just laid there on the floor then a tall skinny man walked over to where I was and saw me he said “I found him” inside his walkie talkie. He turned and said “come on lets go” and picked me up and took me out and put me in a police car. I was really scared of what my parents would do to me.

Once we got to the police station he took me out of the car and told me to sit down on this bench, so I did. After I had been sitting there for a while I saw my mom and dad come running at me and asked if I was OK. I said I was scarred and hungry. My parent also said never to run away again and hugged me. They told the police officer thank you and took me outside and told me to get in the car.
My parents said they talked to my sister about being kinder and more respectful to other people. They sounded relieved.

When we got home my mom and dad said to go to my room and that I’m grounded for a month!!! Then my mom came into my room and asked me if I learned my lesson I said yes and she left. Well, I learned my lesson to never runaway from home ever again no mater what the cause is and that is my RUNAWAY STORY.

THE END!

Tree Classification Essay

I have to do a Tree Classification project. Next time I'll add some pictures of my projects. It turned out to be a really neat project. We over over 15 types of trees on our property.

I found fifteen different types of leaves to research and do a tree/leaf classification on. I choose four different traits to use to classify each leaf and then out of those four I was able to break them down even further into other categories.

The four traits I picked were; Tree type, shape, texture and arrangement. I felt like some of the traits were very easy to identify, like shape, but others like texture were harder to determine. It was very interesting looking at all the different varieties of leafs, especially when they belonged to the same tree family, like the maple for instance.

I choose four different maple trees. The first was a Japanese maple, then a silver maple, red maple and finally a crimson maple. The interesting thing about that is that some had very similar traits, but others were totally different and had nothing in common, yet they all were maple trees.

I enjoyed this project and hope others especially tree observers will find it as interesting as I did.

Traits (used to classify trees) I think all the traits were easily identified, but shape was the easiest and texture was the most difficult. I feel my classification system is very useful because it is simple and easy for the beginner tree observer to understand. The limits to this tree classification system are that it is solely based on one individual’s perception of the tree and the tree leaf and is only classified by those traits.

Tree Type
Maple Birch Oak Eastern Red Bud
Crimson
Silver Apple Bradford pear Spruce
Japanese Norway
Red Blue
Cherry Pine
Weeping White
Black Austrian

Leaf shape
Needle like Rounded (traditional leaf shape) Irregular
White pine Birch Oak
Austrian pine Eastern Red Bud Red Maple
Blue spruce Bradford pear Crimson Maple
Norway spruce Apple Silver maple
Black Cherry Japanese maple
Weeping cherry

Length/width

Short/small Medium Long/large
Birch Bradford pear Eastern Red Bud
Oak Red maple Silver maple
Apple Crimson maple Austrian pine
Black cherry Japanese maple
Weeping cherry White pine
Blue spruce
Norway spruce

Leaf texture
Smooth Rough
Japanese maple Norway spruce
Silver maple Blue spruce
Red Maple Austrian pine
Crimson maple White pine
Weeping cherry
Black Cherry
Apple
Oak
Bradford pear
Eastern Red Bud
Birch

Sharpe/pointed edges Dull/rounded edges
Norway spruce Eastern red bud
Blue spruce Bradford pear
Austrian pine Oak
White pine
Birch
Apple
Weeping cherry
Black cherry
Red maple
Crimson maple
Silver maple
Japanese maple

Leaf arrangement
Single leaf Multi Leaf
Weeping cherry Japanese maple
Black Cherry Birch
Apple Norway Spruce
Oak Blue spruce
Bradford pear Austrian pine
Eastern Red Bud White pine
Crimson maple
Red maple
Silver maple

Lemon Electricity Experiment

I recently investigated on how lemons and other fruits and vegetables can create electricity. I predicted that a lemon or lemons could do this. After all these weeks, I have found that with so many lemons you may be able to light a light bulb or run a motor. I have learned about how the lemon’s acid creates electricity if you roll it with pressure. I’ve also learned about how electricity runs through a circuit. The copper and zinc act as the two different metals or electrodes in a battery and the citric acid in the lemon acts as the acidic solution or electrolyte in the battery. Another thing that I learned is that lemons can produce a dim glow from an LED. I have lastly found that one lemon can produce a voltage of .906 volts but you can wire two or more to it. I’ve learned that electric current is a flow of atomic particles called electrons. Some materials, called conductors, allow electrons to flow through them. Electrons will flow from the “-“ electrode of a battery, through a conductor, towards the “+” electrode of a battery.

Here are more studies from this experiment with lemons to see if they can generate some electricity:
Materials

1. 1+ lemons
2. 1+ pieces of copper wire
3. 1+ pieces of zinc
4. Insulated wires
5. Wire clippers (alligator)
6. Sandpaper
7. 1 LED/flashlight bulb
8. Multimeter

Steps

1. Use the sandpaper to smooth any rough spots on the copper and zinc.
2. Squeeze the lemon gently by rolling it but try not to rupture the skin.
3. Push the copper wire and zinc into the lemon as close together as possible but not touching.
4. Wrap the insulated wires around the copper wire and zinc.
5. connect the wires to the LED in order to see it light up!

Question/problem

Can lemon create/produce electricity?

Hypothesis

I predict it will take two or more lemons to create enough power to light up a light or power a small motor.

Results

I found it very difficult to produce enough electricity to power a light bulb or motor. I was able to get a voltage reading on the multimeter and get a very dim light from a LED bulb. I started with just one lemon and added up to five, which allowed me to get the light to work for a few seconds.

Conclusion

I predicted that lemons could create electricity. Upon further investigation, I found that they could in fact produce very small amounts of electricity. I found that there was enough electricity to power a very low voltage flashlight bulb when enough lemons were connected together.

HOW WALLRUSES GOT TUSKS!

HOW WALLRUSES GOT TUSKS!

Long ago in the freezing land of Marblesmarble with big icy mountains and giant raging snow storms lived thousand of solid oak brown walrus’s .One day a little walrus got brought into the world. He wasn’t like the other walruses he wore a silver colored coat of hair and thought he was a elephant because he wore less fur than tons of the other walruses also he had a bit of along nose. His mom and dad called him Hairy.

One day when he was about 11 years old Hairy wondered why he didn’t have tusks like the elephant in his mom’s book she read to him. So he decided he would travel to the land of the elephants Hubaballooba. Hubaballooba is dry and scorching hot with just a couple of pieces of grass and not a lot of wildlife also with burning sand. Hairy went there to ask the elephants there how to get tusks.

One night when Hairy reached Hubaballooba Hairy spotted an elephant and crawled over to it and asked it why don’t I have tusks? The elephant replied you need to drink from the ancient water hole. So he did as the elephant said and while he was going back to Marblesmarble he grew tusks! He was so excited he couldn’t wait he went as fast as he could to tell his friends and family the news. When he got back to Marblesmarble they where amazed! They loved them so much they all drank out of the ancient water hole and they all grew tusks and that is how walruses got tusks!

by Levi Tate

Author and Student

Student Council Address

I am running for Senator as part of the student council in my school. We are blessed with so many freedoms. We are fortunate that we can vote freely and do as we please, yet, still today other countries do not have such rights and freedoms. In other countries people can not vote and do not even know what their governments are doing! I know that I will always have freedoms in America. I have privileges like the freedom to go to school, religion, speech and press. When I am eighteen I will still have those freedoms and much more, such as the right to vote. I am thankful that I have so many freedoms but sometimes I feel bad for the citizens of other countries who do not have it as good as we do. I think that without our freedoms America would not be what it is today. Freedoms are part of why people from other countries struggle to get into America. One reason why we have so many freedoms is because of our democratic system and how it works to ensure our freedoms in America.

I am also extremely proud to be an American because we live in such a diverse place. We have people from all over the world that visit and live here, like Spanish, Chinese, Australian and German just to name a few. All of these people are here because we have such a wonderful country. Finally, I am proud to be an American, because we have plenty of material possessions. We have so much wealth and opportunities while other countries are poor with very low amounts of water, food and shelter. I am truly lucky to live here in the United States of America!

How to make Smores quick and easy..

I made these Smores with a microwave. If your a kid like me, if your parents let you, you can make these Smore snacks quick and easy.

First you gather the ingredients.

Which are graham crackers, marsh mellows, and chocolate candy bars.

Second, you take out 2 graham crackers, 1 marsh mellow and a small section of chocolate candy bar from their packages.

Then, stack them with a graham cracker on the bottom. Then a piece of chocolate bar, marsh mellow, and another gram cracker on top.

Next, you place your smore on a microwave safe plate. Place it in the microwave and cook it for 60 seconds.

Finally, take out it out of the microwave and enjoy!

Last but not least. Do you know why they call them SMores?
Because after you eat one, you want Some More!

Welcome to the World of some Smart Kids.

Hello, welcome to our website, the World of some Smart Kids, maybe, guess that's a matter of opinion. Encouragement helps.

This is my first post and contribution to our website. Smart Kid World is designed, maintained and published by my brother, sister and myself. We are students, just some kids putting together a website for the first time. Actually, our dad gave us this idea of making a website. It's so that we can take our ideas and share them with other kids, or anybody that is a student or wanted to read some really interesting stuff. Plus it's really cool just to have a website that is yours that you can be proud of because this is our original work that we made.

I don't know, but as a student we are always compelled to write, read and share our opinions. We do lots of book reports and projects in school, they are not our favorite things to do, but with some creative thought, we can make them fun and interesting. Creativity makes learning fun.

Cheers to all the kids out there - here's to the future.
